A gold mystery, strong, still,

A woman looks for the kill,

Waiting for a fatal mistake.

My mind trembles trying to make

Sense of the riddles she’s posed

Of beauty and death combined

in the words composed.

They claw the mind.

Franz von Stuck "The Kiss of the Sphinx" 1895 (PD-1923)

Fatal beauty crouches;

I, tensely, pondering her,

While the riddle waits.
